Cookie Policy

What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, provide a better user experience, and give site owners useful information.

In addition to cookies, Thread also uses similar technologies including localStorage (for storing preferences directly in your browser), tracking pixels, and web beacons. Throughout this policy, we refer to all of these technologies collectively as "cookies."

How We Use Cookies

Thread uses cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:

  • Authentication — NextAuth.js session cookies keep you securely signed in across page loads and browser sessions.
  • Dashboard preferences — Your layout configuration, theme selection, and other settings are stored in localStorage so your experience is consistent every time you return.
  • Platform connection flows — Temporary OAuth cookies are used during the process of connecting your Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Google accounts to Thread. These cookies are short-lived and are removed once the connection is established.

Types of Cookies We Use

3.1 Essential Cookies (Required)

These cookies are strictly necessary for Thread to function. They enable core features such as authentication and security. You cannot disable essential cookies without losing access to the service.

  • next-auth.session-token — Maintains your authenticated session.
  • next-auth.csrf-token — Protects against cross-site request forgery attacks.
  • pending_meta_auth — Temporary cookie used during the Meta OAuth connection flow.
  • pending_tiktok_auth — Temporary cookie used during the TikTok OAuth connection flow.
  • pending_linkedin_auth — Temporary cookie used during the LinkedIn OAuth connection flow.

3.2 Functional Cookies

Functional cookies remember your preferences and personalise your experience. Thread will work without them, but some features may not behave as expected.

  • dashboard-layout-cache — Stores your dashboard widget arrangement so it persists between sessions.
  • grid-scale-v2 — Remembers your preferred grid density and scale settings.
  • Theme preference (light or dark mode).
  • Sidebar collapsed or expanded state.

3.3 Analytics Cookies

Analytics cookies help us understand how you interact with Thread, including which features are most popular and where users encounter issues. This information helps us improve the service for everyone.

  • Usage patterns and page views within the application.
  • Feature adoption and engagement metrics.

ThreadID Pixel Cookies

If you use Thread's first-party analytics pixel (ThreadID) on your own website, the pixel sets a _tid visitor ID cookie on your domain. This is a first-party cookie — it is set on the website owner's domain, not on Thread's domain.

The _tid cookie is used to identify returning visitors and track sessions on your website. It enables Thread to provide you with accurate visitor analytics and attribution data.

Because the ThreadID cookie is set on your domain, you as the website owner are responsible for disclosing its use in your own cookie policy and obtaining any necessary consent from your visitors in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

Third-Party Cookies

Thread does not set third-party advertising or tracking cookies. We do not sell your data or use cookies to serve you ads.

When you connect external platforms such as Google, Meta, TikTok, or LinkedIn via OAuth, those platforms may set their own cookies during the authentication process. These cookies are governed by each platform's own cookie and privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

Managing Cookies

You have several options for controlling how cookies are used on your device:

  • Browser settings — Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies through their settings or preferences menu. Check the help documentation for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge for specific instructions.
  • localStorage — Data stored in localStorage can be cleared through your browser's developer tools (usually accessible via F12 or right-click > Inspect > Application tab).

Please note that blocking or deleting essential cookies will prevent you from signing in and using Thread. Clearing functional cookies or localStorage will reset your dashboard layout and preferences.

Cookie Retention

Different cookies are retained for different periods depending on their purpose:

  • Session cookies — Deleted automatically when you close your browser.
  • Authentication cookies — Up to 30 days from your last sign-in.
  • OAuth pending cookies — 10 minutes. These auto-expire shortly after the connection flow completes or is abandoned.
  • localStorage items — Persist until you clear them manually or the cache is invalidated by a Thread update.
  • ThreadID visitor cookie (_tid) — 1 year from the visitor's last visit.

Updates to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about how we use cookies.
